Tasmania to host Australia’s Leaders

Mon, 24 Apr 2017

The Tasmanian Liberal Senate Team has welcomed the announcement that Tasmania will play host to the Council of Australian Governments meeting later this year.

COAG is a coming together of the Commonwealth, State and Territory Governments and will see the Prime Minister along with all State and Territory leaders coming to Tasmania. This is the first time a COAG meeting has been held in Tasmania since 2009.

“This is an exciting coup for Tasmania and shows the effectiveness of the Tasmanian Liberal Senate Team at ensuring Tasmania has a strong voice within Government. I’m pleased the Prime Minister has decided the meeting should take place in Tasmania, the first meeting to come to our state in 8 years,” Senator Abetz said.

“This meeting follows the record levels of investment in Tasmania by the Federal Liberal Government since 2013, including the more than a billion dollars of investment announced by the Prime Minister over the last month. Having COAG in Tasmania demonstrates the importance that the Federal Government, from the Prime Minister down, places on our state,” Senator Duniam said.

“Tasmania has turned the corner on economic recovery and, for the first time in many years, is experiencing an unemployment rate below the national average. This is a dramatic turnaround from three years ago when we had the worst in the country. I am excited that we will get to showcase our state to the nation’s most foremost leaders,” Senator Bushby said.

“This important meeting will discuss issues important to the Federation and I’m delighted that it will follow the very successful visit of the Diplomatic Corps which I hosted last year to showcase Tasmania to representatives from right around the world,” Senator Parry said.
