Senator Sherry confirms Government backing away from its CPRS
Thu, 11 Mar 2010
In question time today, Senator Nick Sherry stated in response to a Dorothy dixer question on parental leave from a Government Senate backbencher, that ‘the last thing Australia needs is a big new tax’.
“Does this mean he, as Assistant Treasurer, has confirmed the Government has abandoned its Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme or any other emissions trading scheme that has the impact of a big new tax on Australians and Australian businesses?”, Liberal Senator David Bushby asked today.
“The Government must clarify exactly what its position is on its CPRS, which is after all, nothing more than a 'big new tax',” Senator Bushby said.
“It is hard to see how Senator Sherry, a Minister in this Government, when publicly stating that there should be no ‘big new taxes’, is not ruling out the CPRS.
“And in doing so, he is either confirming that this is also the Government’s position, or his fumbled attempt to embarrass the Opposition has put him in a contrary position to the Government on its plan to introduce its great big new tax.”
